Before long, the Maiar Olórin/Gandalf entered Dol Goldur after sensing a dark force lying within, after which Sauron fled to the East once more, due to his lingering doubt in power and fear for his identity. He took up the alias of The Necromancer, a dark sorcerer. Sauron then retreated to the far East having lost almost all his power, and being a shell of his former self.ġ000 years into the Third Era, Sauron began to regain power and followers, and eventually grew strong enough to take up stronghold in Dol Goldur, an abandoned fortress located in the Greenwood (now Mirkwood). Sauron, an extremely powerful Maiar, was destroyed at the end of the Second Age in the Battle of the Alliance, after the One Ring was cut from his hand by Isildur, but not before killing Elendil, Isildur's father, and the High King Gil-galad.
